Technical notes

Mobilgard 570 is a BN 70 (mg KOH/g, ASTM D2896), SAE 50 two-stroke cylinder oil for slow-speed crosshead marine diesel engines burning high-sulphur heavy fuel oil up to 3.5% S. The high reserve alkalinity neutralises the strong sulphuric acid produced when combusting HSFO, protecting liners and rings from corrosive wear, while its detergency controls deposits at the elevated peak firing pressures and liner temperatures of modern two-stroke engines. With a 100°C viscosity of 20 mm²/s, it maintains oil-film thickness for distribution and retention. ExxonMobil notes it also runs cleanly down to about 1.5% sulphur fuel. Cylinder-oil BN and feed rate must be matched to actual fuel sulphur and engine load; confirm grade selection with the engine OEM and ExxonMobil before use.

Compliance

Mobilgard 570 carries No Objection Letters / approvals from MAN Diesel & Turbo (Everllence), Wärtsilä, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan Engine Corporation), and WinGD for two-stroke marine engine cylinder lubrication.

Frequently asked questions

What fuel is Mobilgard 570 for?
It is formulated for slow-speed two-stroke crosshead marine diesel engines operating on high-sulphur heavy fuel oil (HSFO) with sulphur content up to 3.5%, and it stays clean down to roughly 1.5% sulphur.
What is the Base Number (BN) of Mobilgard 570?
Its Base Number is 70 mg KOH/g, measured per ASTM D2896, giving high reserve alkalinity to neutralise the acids formed when burning high-sulphur fuel.
What is its SAE viscosity grade?
Mobilgard 570 is an SAE 50 grade, with a kinematic viscosity of about 20 mm²/s at 100°C and 222 mm²/s at 40°C (viscosity index 104).
Which engine OEMs approve Mobilgard 570?
It carries No Objection Letters from MAN Diesel & Turbo (now Everllence/MAN Energy Solutions, Category I), Wärtsilä and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (now Japan Engine Corporation), and WinGD Liquid Fuel General Usage. Always confirm suitability with the engine OEM and ExxonMobil.
