ExxonMobil Marine Lubricants (Mobilgard)
also known as Mobil, Mobilgard, ExxonMobil Marine
ExxonMobil is one of the world's largest suppliers of marine lubricants, sold under the Mobilgard brand. The Mobilgard range covers the full lubricant requirement of a vessel: two-stroke cylinder oils and system oils for slow-speed crosshead main engines, trunk-piston engine oils for medium- and high-speed four-stroke engines, and the hydraulic, gear and compressor oils that serve auxiliary systems. For two-stroke main engines, the central choice is the cylinder oil base number (BN), which must be matched to the sulphur content of the fuel being burned — a decision that became more complex after the IMO 2020 sulphur cap moved most ships onto VLSFO and LSFO. This hub indexes the Mobilgard grades we catalogue with real datasheet data (base number, viscosity, application and engine-OEM approvals), and frames them against the engine maker's approval and ExxonMobil's own technical guidance, which always take precedence. Mobilgard lubricants are supplied through ExxonMobil's authorised marine distributor network.
The Mobilgard range
Mobilgard spans two-stroke cylinder oils (selected by base number for the fuel sulphur), two-stroke system oils for the crankcase and bearings, and four-stroke trunk-piston engine oils. Each grade is approved by the relevant engine OEMs and chosen by engine type first, then by fuel and duty.
Selecting a Mobilgard cylinder oil
For two-stroke engines, match the cylinder-oil base number to the fuel: high-sulphur fuel needs a high-BN grade, low-sulphur fuel a lower-BN grade. Confirm the specific grade against the engine OEM's approval and ExxonMobil's recommendation for your fuel and engine model.
