Technical notes
Mobilgard 5145 is an extra-high-BN (145 mg KOH/g) SAE 50 cylinder oil for slow-speed two-stroke crosshead engines burning high-sulphur heavy fuel oil. Its optimum 20 cSt at 100°C viscosity and low volatility support good oil-film retention and distribution. The high reserve alkalinity neutralises the sulphuric acid formed during combustion, controlling cold corrosion in newer, more demanding engines where Mobilgard 5100 (100 BN) may not provide sufficient acid neutralisation, and it has been used to enable feed-rate optimisation on high-sulphur fuel, including slow steaming. It carries Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) Category II and WinGD general-usage approvals. Final grade, BN and feed rate must always be confirmed with the engine OEM and ExxonMobil for the specific engine, fuel sulphur and operating profile.
Compliance
Approved as Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) Category II and WinGD Ltd. Liquid Fuel General Usage for 2-stroke marine engines, per the ExxonMobil product data sheet.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the Base Number (BN) of Mobilgard 5145?
- 145 mg KOH/g (ASTM D2896), per the ExxonMobil product data sheet — an extra-high-BN cylinder oil.
- What fuel and engines is Mobilgard 5145 for?
- Slow-speed two-stroke crosshead marine diesel engines burning high-sulphur heavy fuel oil, where high acid neutralisation is needed to control cold corrosion. It is approved as Everllence Category II and for WinGD general usage.
- What is the SAE grade and viscosity of Mobilgard 5145?
- It is an SAE 50 oil with a kinematic viscosity of 20 cSt (mm²/s) at 100°C.
- How does it differ from Mobilgard 5100?
- Mobilgard 5145's higher 145 BN provides greater acid neutralisation than the 100 BN Mobilgard 5100, benefiting highly corrosive engines and enabling feed-rate optimisation on high-sulphur fuel. Confirm selection with the engine OEM and ExxonMobil.
