Technical notes

Cyltech 80 AW is an 80 BN, SAE 50 mineral cylinder oil for two-stroke crosshead marine diesel engines. Its high base number neutralises the large volume of sulphuric acid produced when burning high-sulphur residual fuel (HSFO), typically above 2.5-3% and up to 3.5% sulphur, while anti-wear (AW) additives resist adhesive wear of liners and rings to extend overhaul intervals. It was developed specifically for slow- and super-slow-steaming, where reduced power and lower feed rates raise the risk of acidic corrosion. At launch it was approved by MAN Diesel and Wartsila, reportedly the only oil cleared by Wartsila at minimum feed rates for fuels up to 3.5% S. Grade selection and feed-rate setting must be confirmed with the engine OEM and Castrol for the specific engine and fuel.

Compliance

Specifications (BN 80, SAE 50) and MAN Diesel/Wartsila approvals are corroborated across bp/Castrol's product directory and independent marine trade press; final grade and feed-rate selection must be confirmed with the engine OEM and Castrol.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Base Number and viscosity grade of Castrol Cyltech 80 AW?
It is an 80 BN (mg KOH/g) cylinder oil in SAE 50 grade, per bp/Castrol's product directory. The high BN neutralises acids formed when burning high-sulphur residual fuel.
What fuels and engines is Cyltech 80 AW intended for?
It is intended for the cylinder lubrication of two-stroke crosshead marine diesel engines running on high-sulphur residual fuel (HSFO), typically above 2.5-3% sulphur and up to 3.5% S, especially under slow-steaming conditions.
Which engine makers approve Cyltech 80 AW?
It is approved by MAN Diesel and Wartsila, and was reported at launch as the only product approved by Wartsila for use at minimum feed rates for fuels up to 3.5% sulphur. Confirm current approvals with Castrol and the engine OEM.
