Technical notes

Cyltech 40 XDC (eXtra Deposit Control) is a 40 BN, SAE 50 cylinder oil holding a MAN Energy Solutions Category II No Objection Letter. The Category II passing criterion is that a 40 BN oil perform as good as or better than a Category II 100 BN reference oil; in MAN ES field testing on a MAN B&W two-stroke (Mark 9-and-above) engine running fuel below 0.5% sulphur, it was confirmed equivalent to a 100 BN reference with less crown-land deposit. It is formulated for marine fuels at or below 0.5% sulphur (VLSFO, ULSFO, MGO) and is a Category II lubricant for LNG and methanol, so one 40 BN oil covers clean-up and normal duty without alternating high- and low-BN oils. Confirm grade selection and feed rate with MAN ES and Castrol.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Base Number and viscosity grade of Castrol Cyltech 40 XDC?
It is a 40 BN (40 mg KOH/g) oil with an SAE 50 viscosity grade, per the Castrol product literature and the MAN ES No Objection Letter.
Which engines and fuels is Cyltech 40 XDC approved for?
It holds a MAN Energy Solutions Category II No Objection Letter, is approved across all MAN ES engine types and recommended for MAN B&W two-stroke engines Mark 9 and higher, for marine fuels at or below 0.5% sulphur as well as LNG and methanol. Always confirm the correct grade and feed rate with MAN ES and Castrol.
Do I need a separate high-BN oil for clean-up running?
No. Castrol states one 40 BN oil covers all operations requiring a 40 BN cylinder oil; because it tested equal to or better than a Category II 100 BN reference oil, there is no need to alternate between high- and low-BN oils.
